Qingyuan Pumped Storage Hydropower Station Project


Background

The Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Qingyuan County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province. The project hub mainly consists of the upper reservoir, lower reservoir, water conveyance system, underground powerhouse, and surface switchyard, with a total installed capacity of 1,200 MW, classified as a Class I large (Type 1) project. The lower reservoir dam adopts a reinforced concrete face rockfill dam. The lower reservoir intake/outlet structure employs a lateral bank-tower type intake. The intake tower has a foundation elevation of 622.00 m, a top elevation of 685.00 m, and a height of 63.00 m, with a normal water storage level of 681.00 m. The intake tower is a Class 1 structure, and the seismic fortification category is Class A.


The Zhejiang Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station undertakes tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, energy storage, frequency regulation, phase modulation, and emergency backup for the Zhejiang power grid. The station has an installed capacity of 1,200 MW, a continuous full-load generation duration of 9 hours, and weekly regulation capability. The rated head of the power station is 504 m, with a distance-to-head ratio of 4.2. The Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station can effectively promote the absorption of new energy sources such as wind and solar power within the grid, improve power supply quality, and ensure safe, economical, and stable grid operation. It can also facilitate the rational distribution of externally imported electricity within the East China power grid, forming complementary advantages within the region and enhancing the dispatching flexibility of the East China power grid. Based on the 2030 power source optimization results for the Zhejiang power grid, the average annual utilization hours of the installed capacity at Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station are 1,208 hours. For the economic evaluation of the Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station, the annual power generation in the design target year is taken as 1.449 billion kWh, with a corresponding annual pumping electricity consumption of 1.449 billion kWh.

Project challenge

Qingyuan Pumped Storage is the only large-scale weekly-regulation pumped storage power station in Zhejiang (total installed capacity of 1.2 million kW). It is situated in the high-altitude mountainous area of the Donggong Mountains in southwestern Zhejiang and comprises various special concrete structures including upper and lower reservoirs, ultra-long water conveyance tunnels, deeply buried underground powerhouses, high-pressure shafts, and high-pier bridges in the reservoir area. Superimposed with five special conditions—high-humidity and rainy mountain climate, complex volcanic rock geology, weekly cyclic water level fluctuation, confined underground construction, and restricted mountain transportation—the concrete faces prominent technical challenges across six dimensions: materials, temperature control and crack resistance, durability and impermeability, construction conditions, structural loading, and on-site support.

Solution from ARIT

The mix proportion was redesigned. The water-to-binder ratio of hydraulic concrete is approximately 0.05 lower than that of normal concrete. Meanwhile, the fly ash content is not high; for concrete for normal purposes, the fly ash content is around 15%. In addition, the mix proportion contains almost no ground granulated blast-furnace slag powder.
