Background

Internal curing agents for concrete are admixtures added during concrete mixing, containing hygroscopic and water-retaining components. These agents can provide the necessary moisture for the hydration process of concrete, thereby enhancing the strength and durability of the concrete. They contain high molecular weight water-absorbing resins that release moisture in a timely manner to maintain adequate internal moisture within the concrete. By compensating for the moisture loss within the concrete and increasing the internal humidity, they can inhibit the shrinkage of the concrete itself. This has become a relatively effective technical method for reducing concrete cracking and improving structural durability.

Project challenge

Technically, its water absorption capacity directly affects the workability of fresh concrete. The additional water compensation must be precisely calculated; otherwise, it will interfere with the water-to-binder ratio and may introduce air bubbles or have potential impacts on the later strength and durability. Secondly, in terms of construction, its dosage is extremely small, which requires high precision in material feeding and thorough mixing. Thirdly, in terms of economic cost, high-performance internal curing materials are expensive, increasing the cost per cubic meter of concrete. Lastly, in terms of cognition and standards, the lack of widely accepted design application guidelines and unified industry standards restricts its large-scale promotion and acceptance in engineering.

Solution from ARIT

The recommended dosage is 5% to 8% of the cementitious materials, which can also be determined through testing.
